College
Silas played college basketball at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. In his senior year Silas led Stephen F. Austin to a 29-1 record, averaging 30.7 points per game. Silas was also named an NAIA All-American twice in his college career.
Professional
Silas was drafted in the 1972 National Basketball Association Draft by the Houston Rockets. Silas would prove his worth being named to the ABA All-Rookie team at the end of the season. Following the 1972-73 season, the Chaparrals were sold and moved to San Antonio, becoming the San Antonio Spurs. Silas was named to the ABA All-Star team in 1975 and 1976, as well as the All-ABA 2nd team in 1975 and All-ABA 1st team in 1976. Silas’s best year statistics-wise was easily 1976, when he averaged 23.8 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game; the points and assists per game would prove to be the highest in his career. Silas played for the Spurs for eight seasons (nine if the one season with the Dallas Chaparrals is included), including five years in the NBA after the Spurs moved into that league in 1977. Following the 1981 season Silas was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he played for one year before retiring. Silas was an exceptional free throw shooter throughout his entire career, ranking in the top 10 in free throw percentage in six separate seasons, and finishing with a career free-throw percentage of 85.5%. On February 28, 1984, Silas’s #13 became the first number ever retired by the San Antonio Spurs, and he is currently one of only six players to have received that honor from the franchise.
Current Career
The Austin Association of Midnight Basketball Program (Association of Midnight Basketball) is directed by James Silas, retired NBA San Antonio Spurs All Star. Silas is inducted into the Louisiana and Texas Hall of Fame (San Antonio, TX), and the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame. He is a member of the “Top 30 ABA All-Time Team”. The Austin Association of Midnight Basketball has served over 1500 program participants. James Silas also serves as the National Director of the Association of Association of Midnight Basketballs Inc., headquartered in San Francisco, CA. THE Non- Profit Organization, ATHLETES SERVICES NETWORK OF AMERICA (ASNA) is in AustinTEXAS to provide sports outreach and education programs to At-risk youth through their Austin Association of Midnight Basketball Program League Program (Association of Midnight Basketball). AUSTIN MIDNIGHT BASKETBALL is located in the City of Austin, Texas
1999-2012, 18 years, Silas was Commissioner of this program and served youth ages 17-25 offering the game of basketball as a lure, but provided seminars and workshops to at risk youth to direct them to become contributing citizens. In 2013, Silas added a program serving youth ages 12-17 years of age and recruits young men and continues to coordinate them into 6 to 8 teams with volunteer coaches from the 17-25 year old league. The game of basketball is played from 9 pm up to 12 am or from 7pm-10pm for youth served 12-17. Association of Midnight Basketball selects National Basketball Association (NBA) Team names and provided non-gang color uniforms imprinted with the Association of Midnight Basketball logo, and utilize gymnasiums on Park and Recreation and on college campuses. 2014-2015 marks the 20th year of operation and funding for the Free Austin Association of Midnight Basketball (Association of Midnight Basketball) for Youth, having served over 2000 program participants!

Nelson was the first Program Director in the first chapter of the Association of Midnight Basketball League in Glen Arden, Maryland. His father, G. Van Standifer, found the MBL, Inc. in June, 1986. Nelson has been working with the Association of Midnight Basketball since this time. He is currently the President of the Glen Arden Association of Midnight Basketball League, Inc.

Officer Jumaal Hill has been an accomplished member of the Oakland Police Department for the past 22 years. As a native of Oakland California, he was inspired from a young age to join the force that served not only as the protective force of the community, but also helped the community through team work and service. Since he has been on the force, Officer Hill has helped to bring forth much changes in the community through his outreach work and his efforts to help the youth of Oakland understand the true mission of the police force. Through leadership and dedication, he continues to serve the entire City of Oakland.

Officer Hill attended all Oakland Public schools, graduating from Oakland Technical High School. He was a three sport student athlete, playing varsity basketball, football, and wrestling. Officer Hill went on to further his education at Merritt Community College where he was introduced to the Oakland Police Cadets Program. After spending 6 months as a Police Cadet he joined the Oakland Police force at the age of 22 years old.

During his tenure as part of the Oakland Police Department, Officer Hill has worked in several Divisions. He spent 5 years of his career in the patrol Division where he has been part of hundreds of investigation and has made an arrest for every major crime. He spent 5 years working in the school division where he realized his love for working with the youth of Oakland. And the last 12 years working in the Youth Outreach Unit as the Program Director for the Oakland Police Activities League (PAL).

Officer Hill has received several awards and accommodations during his time, but according to him, his best work has been through the PAL Program. His contributions to the community through educational, enrichment, and sports program has made a positive impact on thousands of lives throughout Oakland. Officer Hill hopes to continue his service with the community with diligence and trustworthiness.
