The new Association of Midnight Basketball in Fort Worth, Texas will become a member of the Tarrant County School Justice Partnership as a wraparound prevention and Intervention resource clearinghouse to help the community address issues relating to truancy in Tarrant County.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS – During the 84th Legislative Session, the Texas Legislature passed HB 2398, entitled the Omnibus Truancy Reform Bill that required establishing a truancy committee appointed by the County Judge and Mayor, a truancy plan, addressing prevention and intervention strategies, uniform countywide truancy policies and providing recommendations to each school district located within Tarrant County.

The goal of this initiative was met on February 9, 2016, at Tarrant County College Northwest Campus and again on January 11, 2017, through a briefing session to the Tarrant County School District Superintendent by the Truancy Committee Presiding Officer.

The committee agreed that the HB 2398 legislative requirements were met and a formal letter was provided to the County Judge and Mayor ahead of the December 2017 deadline. There was also an agreement to move forward with the approval of the new School Justice Partnership.

The Independent School Districts and Open-Enrollment Charter Schools located or operating within Tarrant County, Tarrant County the City of Fort Worth, Texas and the Tarrant County Justice of the Peace Courts, Juvenile Court and Municipal Courts That Handle Truancy Cases understand the importance of community collaboration in providing a positive and supportive environment for the children and youth, and agree that the quality of the community, justice system and the education students receive directly affect the overall quality of life throughout Tarrant County.

The next meeting of the Tarrant County Truancy Steering Committee will be held in the Tarrant County Administration Building on Friday, August 25, 2017 at the County Administrator’s Office Suite 403 –from 11: 30 am to 1 pm 100 East Weatherford St, Fort Worth, TX to continue our discussions and commitments to this initiative.
